As Sherwin's roommate, I can attest to the obnoxious olfactory qualities of our Soviet roommate, a graduate of the Soviet Army, whose modest capabilities were much better suited to a kolkhoz than Leningrad State University. It was an Orwellian world, but people still carried on their restricted lives one way or another, and even had some fun.
